| EXTENDED EDUCATION INFORMATION BACK Cable in the Classroom Cable in the Classroom represents the cable telecommunications industry's commitment to education—to improve teaching and learning for children in schools, at home, and in their communities. This is the only industry-wide philanthropic initiative of its kind. Since 1989, 8,500 cable companies and 39 cable networks have provided free access to commercial-free, educational cable content and new technologies to 81,000 public and private schools, reaching 78% of K-12 students. CIC focuses on five essential elements to ensure quality education in the 21st century:
These networks and local cable companies act as partners by providing free cable connections and over 540 hours per month of commercial-free educational programming to schools across the country. Cable networks, such as CNN, Discovery, A&E, and Nickelodeon have set aside a portion of their on-air schedule for commercial-free programming on subjects as varied as science, art, history, math, literature, and world events. Some of the programming is created specifically for Cable in the Classroom, while other networks, such as A&E, often reformatted documentaries (and other programs) specifically for Cable in the Classroom with teacher-friendly modules. All of the programs are copyright cleared so schools can build their own video libraries. List of Current Cable in the Classroom Contributors |
